About Eserian Parish

Eserian Parish started off from a very humble background following restructuring of Mbagathi Parish on 4th December 2005. The parish constituted five congregations namely: – Kahuho (now named Ahadi), Kandisi, Illmerijo, Nkoroi, Smryna and one outreach congregation namely: – Oloosirkon

Parish offices are located at PCEA Nkoroi with One Office Secretary and two Envangelist; One employed by the parish and other by the presbytery.

The Parish is situated in a semi-urban environment and shares boundaries with Mbagathi Parish to the east, Oloolaiser Parish to the north, Kiserian Parish to the north-west, Olooloitikoshi Parish to the west and Baraka Parish to the South. It provides strong Christian foundation to Kenyans who are continuously migrating from the ever busy and congested city life to a more relaxed and conducive environment for development

The Parish has great potential for spiritual, economic development and indeed in all aspects that require pastoral nurture. The parish is home to six (6) congregations that were founded at different times. By the grace of God all the congregations have witnessed a steady growth from inception to their current status.

The first Parish Minister, Rev. Samuel Pulei (Retired) served in an acting capacity until 14th January 2006 when Rev. Francis Ndungu Gatua was posted to the Parish by the Appointments committee as the substantive Parish Minister. He molded and nurtured the young parish for three-and-a-half (3½) years until his transfer to Ruiru Parish in PCEA Kambui Presbytery.

Rev. Dr. Alphonse O. Kanga was then posted to the parish on 28th July 2009 as the new Parish Minister, also served for three-and-a-half (3½) years until December 2012. Under his leadership, the Parish grew from strength to strength especially in membership and spiritually.

Rev. Justin Mutembei Njagi joined the parish from Mtwapa parish upon transfer in December 2012 and served for five (5) years until December 2017 when he was transferred to Kalimoni Parish in Thiririka Presbytery and handed over to Rev. Michael Muriungi Inoti who moved from Gaaki Parish in Nyeri Presbytery served upto October 2019 when he was transferred to Ruchu west Parish in kihumbuini parish consequently handed over to Rev.Mburu  Changari from Ngecha Presbytery Kahuho parish the now present parish Minister.

Eserian Parish membership is estimated at 1500 under the stewardship of the Parish Minister, assisted by forty-three (43) active Elders and fourteen (14) retired Elders. The Parish is situated in a semi-urban environment and shares boundaries with Mbagathi Parish to the east, Oloolaiser Parish to the North, Kiserian Parish to the North-west, Olooloitikoshi Parish to the west and Baraka Parish to the South. It provides strong Christian foundation to Kenyans who are continuously migrating from the ever busy and congested city life to a more relaxed and conducive environment for development.

The Parish has great potential for spiritual, economic development and indeed in all aspects that require pastoral nurture. Eserian parish is home to six (6) congregations that were founded at different times which by the grace of God all have witnessed a steady growth from inception to their current status.

About Nkoroi Congregation

PCEA Nkoroi is the oldest congregations in Eserian Parish. Its humble beginnings can be traced around June 1965, as one of the congregations in then Ngong Parish. The church is situated in Nkoroi along Magadi road.

The first (inaugural) worship service was held under the shade of acacia tree and was conducted by Rev. Jackson Njiraini. Construction of a worship sanctuary with a capacity of 250 commenced on February 8, 1975 and was completed and dedicated in 1982. The church celebrated its golden jubilee on 7th June 2015.

The church’s focus was mainly on evangelism and mission work. Consequently, new congregations were established to ensure that members did not have to travel long distances to attend worship services on Sundays. Growth was also accelerated by the migration trends witnessed in the 1990’s as people settled in the area as they avoided the noise and the social challenges of city of life.

New districts were formed with the aim of ensuring that both new and old members were within reach of pastoral care. The church currently has fourteen districts each headed by an elder assisted by at least four deacons.

The Church holds four worship services every Sunday.

Church membership is estimated at 1200 in the following categories: –

  • Full membership (communicants) has grown from 90 (in 2010) – 350
  • Adherents are about  – 250
  • Youth – (including about – 50 communicants) –  200
  • Church School children – 400
  • Active elders – 14
  • Retired elders (in attendance) –   7

The Church has established a business section commonly referred to as – Income Generating Units (IGU). This was done with dual objectives to: –

  • Generate supplementary church income to ensure sustained MMF remittances
  • Create employment to qualified, competent and born-again persons (preferably Presbyterians members)

The word Kandisi is derived from the Maasai: – “Endisi” that means – beautiful lash green plains. The church is located in Kajiado North constituency, Ngong Sub-County, Ongata Rongai division and lower Nkoroi sub location along Ole Kasasi drive

The history of the church dates back to 1985 when sixty members of Nkoroi church started worshipping at Giciango’s  place under the tree. However, majority returned to PCEA Nkoroi leaving behind only eleven families that continued meeting under the tree for worship on Sundays.

After six months of meeting under a tree, Elder James Wambugu donated a quarter (¼) acre parcel of land to the church for construction of a worship sanctuary. Members contributed and constructed a semi-permanent building that served as church where regular Sunday worship services were conducted.

The church embarked on an expansion program that resulted in the acquisition of additional half (½) acre of land, increased membership, and had four districts namely Latia, Scheme six, District Seven and Kimandiro. Church groups were also active and functional,

Around 1994/1995 members agreed to build a bigger and permanent worship sanctuary, after the ground breaking ceremony construction work began. The dedication ceremony was done in 1998. The first service in the new church was conducted in 2002. Arrangements are in process to have the Church building formally dedicated.

In 1999 the Kimandiro district with eleven families formed P.C.E.A Macedonia Church, it is now the parish headquarters of Baraka Parish.

In the year 2000 four elders were ordained and new districts were curved out from the existing ones to enable enhance pastoral care among the rapidly growing church membership. The additional districts were: – Serian, Dam, Roy sambu, and Lemelepo.

In 2009, the church had 8 districts after the ordination of two additional elders. Two new districts namely: –  Emmanuel and Ebenezer were formed to accommodate the increased number of elders. The church has altogether nine (9) after subsequent ordinations in 2016 and 2019.The church conducts three (3) Sunday services viz English, Kiswahili and Church School

The church has also embarked on projects aimed at improving the welfare of the Kandisi community as follows: –

A primary school initially started by the PCMF in 2012 and later handed over to the church.

In 2014, drilled a borehole, and clean soft water was distributed to various homes.

In 2015, the Woman’s Guild bought a quarter (¼) acre parcel of land at Rangau and started another school.

The PCEA Smryna Parish, is situated in the Olkasasi township, Ongata Rongai ward of Kajiado County. Prior to 1990 Olkasasi existed as a Church District within PCEA Ongata Rongai under Elder Samuel Njuguna Mukuna. Due to challenges experienced during rainy seasons, where the river Kandisi would overflow its banks making crossing very risky due to the increased water volume and crocodiles, members of the District agreed to look for land to build a new church. Efforts were exerted towards getting a County Council public plot within Olkasasi township for this purpose.

Fortunately, the plot was allocated in 1997 after which this district was detached from the PCEA Ongata Rongai congregation to become the 7th congregation of the then Mbagathi Parish.  In consideration that it took (seven) 7 years to acquire the plot, and this was to become the 7th congregation, a vision dawned on Elder Mukuna that resulted to the naming this congregation as” Smryna” in reference to the 7th Church in Revelation 2:8-11; among the churches addressed by Jesus in Revelation 1 – 3

The land was consequently dedicated on 23rd May 1999 by Rev Stephen Kariuki, the Parish Minister of Mbagathi Parish.

The initial ten (10) members started holding open air service Session for a period of one year. During this period the members started to build a multipurpose hall and through God’s grace, this hall became ready for use as a sanctuary on Sundays while it hosted nursery school children during the weekdays.

There were plans to use the upper floor of the same building as health services facility but were advised against mixing children with the sick on the same building. Consequently, the idea was abandoned and another building for the health centre was started in year 2002.

Development of all these projects were informed by the need to develop a wholesome person ready to serve God.

With time, the need to develop an all-weather foot bridge across river Kandisi became necessary and through the support of Bergeland school support we were able to connect our institution to the national electricity grid, construct a bridge and also develop the small clinic to a fully-fledged health centre.

Through the support of the members and other development partners including the Outreach Foundation, a semi-permanent church building was constructed and is in use as a worship sanctuary. This church was dedicated on 18th July 2010 by Rev. Dr Alponce O Kanga, the Parish Minister – Eserian Parish on behalf of the Ngong Hills Presbytery.

In the short time it has been in existence, it has been able to grow its membership from 10 to 85. There are five (5) active elders and one (1) retired elder

The church has witnessed tremendous physical growth in the following areas:

  1. Acquired a total of 4.5 acres of land the church
  2. Constructed a reasonable semi-permanent church structure
  3. Started a primary level school project
  4. Started a health services facility
  5. Constructed an all-weather foot bridge across river Kandisi

About Oloosirkon Congregation

PCEA Oloosirkon was started in the Month of November 1995 by the late Rev. Samuel Nakeel. This was done through the effort of the retired Elder Lawrence Chuhi.

By then the membership consisted of Elder Chuhi’s family and Leng’ete’s family. The membership was low because of the Low population in the area.

The late Leng’ete and family donated a plot to build the Parish.

Elder Chuhi served for a long time as the only elder. Later Rev. Stephen Kariuki ordained Elder Ruth Leng’ete and Elder Kinaiya.

The two later relocated, Elder Ruth went to USA while Elder Kinaiya went back PCEA Kandisi. This made Elder Chuhi to serve alone until the parish sent Elder Cosmas.

After another long period there was a necessity to have another Elder and Elder Daniel Kimonyi was ordained.

Elder Kimonyi worked for a long time until when Kirk Session sent Elder Kamanu and the Late Elder Joseph Ndung’u Mwaura to assist.

In the month of April 2016 two more Elders were ordained. The two are Elder Rahab Njoroge and Elder James Makumi.

In the year 2015 the Parish Session approved the LCC plans to build a permanent church building in partnership with Outreach Foundation.  Construction began immediately and the new worship sanctuary with a capacity of 350 persons was dedicated in June 2017 by the moderator of Kajiado Presbytery.

About Ahadi Congregation

This congregation was previously known as Kahuho but later changed to Ahadi (Kiswahili word for – Promise).

The church was founded and planted by Rev. Stephen Njoroge Kariuki who was then the Parish Minister of Mbagathi Parish. The first worship service was held on 8/11/2001 at Gichagi in Kahuho under a tree, and had seven members and one elder. The church was supported and nurtured by both the Parish (Mbagathi by then) and a student Minister (now Rev. Stephen Ndoria Murigu) and P.C.E.A Nkoroi who assigned elder Nahashon Kinuthia Hinga.

In the year 2002, the Church purchased ½ an acre plot at a price of KSh. 800,000and on 23/06/2002 the first worship service was held on the new site. On 10/10/2002, a new semi-permanent church sanctuary was erected. The church membership increased gradually and by 10/1/2003 the registered members had risen to 40 (26 communicants (full members) and 14 adherents) and also 24 Sunday school children.

The LCC with the approval of the Eserian Parish Session approached the Outreach Foundation, for financial support to build a permanent sanctuary. The ground breaking for this project was carried out on 12/08/2009, presided over by then, the Parish Minister Rev. Alphonse Kanga and on 29/11/2009 he also laid the foundation stone. The new sanctuary was opened and dedicated on 28/02/2010 by Rt. Rev. David Gathanju (Moderator of 17th – 18th General Assemblies).

Current membership stands at:
